Christien Kafton Biography
Christien Kafton is an American journalist currently working as a reporter at KTVU News. He has been reporting for the station since 2009. During his time at KTVU, he has worked every shift, from 4:30 a.m. for “Mornings on 2” to “Ten O’Clock News.”
During his career at the station, he has covered hard-hitting topics, including his Emmy-nominated coverage of the fatal Ghost Ship fire and the Tubbs fire. Christien has also covered lighter human interest topics, such as the famed Bay to Breakers and many San Francisco Giants and Golden State Warriors championships.
Kafton is a Bay Area native who grew up watching KTVU Channel 2 News, which was hosted by iconic anchor Dennis Richmond. Christien was born in Oakland and grew up in Berkeley. He attended Maybeck High School and UC Berkeley before leaving the state to pursue graduate studies at Northwestern University. His initial reporting position brought him to Plattsburgh, NY, and he then moved on to Toledo, OH, and Phoenix, AZ, before returning to the Bay Area, where he worked at NBC Bay Area before joining Channel 2 News.
He presently leads KTVU’s San Francisco bureau, which covers topics from City Hall to Chase Center. When he’s not working, you can find him riding his bike around Golden Gate Park with his family or on the baseball field, trying to keep up with his son.
