William Pitts Biography
William Pitts is an American, Emmy, Associated Press, and Gracie award-winning reporter and multi-skilled journalist for 12News. He joined the 12News team in September 2010. Previously, Pitts reported at KEPR, the CBS affiliate in Pasco, WA, and KREM, the CBS station in Spokane, WA.
William received recognition for his article Common Ground, which told the stories of two families whose children unintentionally drowned, with a 2017 Rocky Mountain Emmy and an Associated Press Award. The 2017 Presidents Award was also given to the report by the Drowning Prevention Coalition of Arizona. Pitts is also the proud owner of a 2017 Rocky Mountain Emmy for Charlie Foxtrot, a show that brought attention to the problems with mental health that Arizona’s veterans experience.
Pitts received a Gracie Award from the Alliance of Women in Media in 2019 for his report Impact: Sexual Assault Survivors. These reports provided a voice to the diverse narratives of Arizonan survivors of sexual assault during the #MeToo movement.
At the age of 15, Pitts began his career in journalism after being hired as a teen reporter for the Apache County Observer. In a matter of months, he rose to the position of Senior Staff Reporter, overseeing fifteen employees.
Pitts, a Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication graduate from Arizona State University won the Hearst National Journalism Championship for Radio Reporting.
