Daniel Ezra is a British actor and director best known for his leading role in the popular American sports drama television series “All American,” where he plays Spencer James, a talented high school football player.
Ezra was born in Birmingham, England. Jamaica was the birthplace of both his maternal and paternal grandparents. He enjoyed reading Philip Pullman’s works, Harry Potter, and The Lord of the Rings as a child. He played basketball as a child but gave up athletics when he started acting. He spent as much time as possible in South Central Los Angeles after learning he had been cast, always carrying a football with him to absorb the local way of life and develop his accent. To practice his American accent, Ezra also studied every song and interview of his favorite rapper, Nipsey Hussle, who was from Crenshaw, the area where the show is set.
There was no accent coach for him. Ezra’s role is based on the real-life football player Spencer Paysinger, who also gave him and his costar Taye Diggs a tour of his area to help them learn about its dynamics. Ezra also continuously watched the NFL Network to understand American football regulations to get ready for the show. When he tried to stroll around Times Square and was recognized by admirers who came up to him, Ezra realized the concert was a hit.

Spencer faces the questions of race, identity, and family throughout the show as he tries to excel as both a football player and a student.
The first few seasons of All American revolve around Spencer and his family, his fight with his father’s history of violence, and his budding romance with Olivia Baker, played by Samantha Logan. As there is a development of the loving relationship between Spencer and Olivia, the transformation of the main character is in focus. In Season 3, for instance, Spencer has grown up even as his character progressively develops both in sports and in terms of his personal life.
In later seasons, there are new problems for Spencer, who, along with preparing for a future as a professional football player, has to struggle with the challenges of transitioning from high school to adulthood. His character is one of the cornerstones of the show, and watching Ezra grow on the show, especially through his acting, is amazing.
After six seasons as Spencer, the actor departs All American as a series regular. The last episode says farewell to Spencer and Ezra with one of the series’ most anticipated events: a Spelivia wedding. After winning the Super Bowl and making it to the NFL, Spencer is now married to the love of his life. After a weekend filled with disappointments that left them believing their wedding could never happen (or, at least, not for another year), Spencer and Olivia can tie the knot in the backyard of his boyhood home, capping up the episode on a happy note.

Daniel Ezra has found a new challenge to escape after breaking tackles for six seasons on the popular CW series All American. According to insiders who spoke to Deadline, he will be appearing in Paramount’s adaptation of The Running Man, which stars Glen Powell.
