Lisa Fernandez is an American journalist currently working as a digital content producer at KTVU-TV. She joined the KTVU team in May 2017, and she has worked in the Bay Area for more than thirty years. Lisa is an old-fashioned newspaper reporter who works online.
At KTVU, Lisa reports on the sexual abuse scandal at the all-women’s FCI Dublin prison, where she was recognized by the Society of Professional Journalists of Northern California in 2024 as the “Journalist of the Year,” the in-custody deaths at Santa Rita Jail, and the federal oversight over the Oakland Police Department. In addition, she covers civil rights lawsuits, immigration, education, and breaking news. She truly enjoys producing light features.

Fernandez spent most of her career as a print writer for the San Jose Mercury News, covering police, city hall, and religion. She has also worked for the Los Angeles Times, the San Francisco Chronicle, Reuters, NBC Bay Area, and the Rochester Democrat & Chronicle, where she comes from.
She met her spouse in 1995, while they were both teenage reporters at Bay City News in San Francisco, her first serious media job.
Lisa enjoys teaching journalism and has been an adjunct professor at San Jose State University. She holds a master’s degree in journalism from Medill at Northwestern University.
Lisa spends her leisure time volunteering with the Society of Professional Journalists in San Quentin Prison, where she helps jailed men improve their writing and reporting abilities, as well as coaching high school seniors on how to write college essays.
She is also a fitness teacher who teaches spin, yoga, aqua, and body sculpting sessions.
